Welcome

On behalf of the faculty and staff at Piñon Hills Elementary School, I would like to welcome you to our web site!

I hope that this newsletter finds you ready and excited for the final stretch toward the end of the school year.  The end of the year always brings many different activities for students and parents, so please read the Monthly newsletter carefully so you don’t miss out on some exciting events!

During May we are excited by the opportunity to recognize and celebrate our staff during staff appreciation week, May 7th through May 11th.  This is a great time to celebrate the hard working individuals who give so much to our students at PHES.

May also means our final round of testing and then summer break is just around the corner.  Our MAP testing (measurement of academic progress) has already begun. Please take great care to make certain that your student is at school each day, has plenty of sleep, and eats a good breakfast.

This time of year brings many celebrations.  Two important ones are our Kindergarten Celebration and our 6th Grade Celebration.  The Kindergarten Celebration will be held Tuesday, May 29th at 6:00 PM in the PHES multi-purpose room.  Our 6th Grade Celebration will be held on Thursday, May 31st, with a barbeque for students at 12:45 and an awards ceremony at 1:30 in the PHES multi-purpose room.  Families are invited to attend both the Kindergarten Celebration and the 6th grade awards ceremony.

Unfortunately, the state budget crisis and declining enrollment will impact students at PHES for the coming 2012-2013 school year.  Presently, PHES is expected to lose 1.5 teaching positions.  As a result of these cuts, parents should expect class sizes to increase and fewer services and programs to be available for students.

It has been the policy at PHES to put the next year’s classroom teacher on students’ report cards on the last day of school.  However, this year due to the uncertainty of staffing, we are postponing class assignments until we are certain what teachers we will have at PHES.   If assignments are not made before report cards go out on June 1st, class lists will be available for students and parents to review on Wednesday, August 15th.  I want to remind everyone that we do not accept requests for specific teachers.  Thank you for your cooperation.

The school year ends on Friday, June 1st, and will not resume until Monday, August 20th.  We hope you are able to enjoy your family time this summer, but we would encourage you to keep your children's brains engaged!  The Douglas County Public Library has many great programs to keep your child focused on reading this summer.  Take the time to check them out! All of the library programs are free and they offer fun family opportunities throughout the summer.
